The acute shortage of young people at defense enterprises and in the far north is forcing the Russian authorities to equate work there for young people with military service.

Putin has expanded employment opportunities for those planning to choose alternative civilian service in the army. The head of state ordered the creation of “production companies” for university graduates who are ready to work for several years at defense enterprises. It is possible that civil aviation pilots who agree to work in the conditions of the Russian North will be able to serve under this scheme in the future.

“Yesterday we agreed with Sergei Kozhugetovich, and I signed the corresponding document, according to which some of the young people we need to work at defense enterprises will actually serve alternative service at their place of work in the so-called production companies,” Vladimir Putin is quoted as saying. Kommersant.

Now a conscript can choose alternative civilian service if military service contradicts his ideological beliefs or religion. There are 126 careers to choose from, such as working in hospitals and nursing homes. According to statistics, less than 1% of conscripts choose alternative civilian service.

The creation of “production companies” was previously sought by several departments and business associations, although they proposed to formalize such activities as a deferment from military service. The Russian Union of Rectors was the first to speak on this topic back in 2013, but then the authorities did not listen to it. In March of this year, the idea was revived by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. At a meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, he proposed giving excellent students a deferment from the army for five years if they go to work at enterprises of the military-industrial complex.

The governors of Kamchatka, Magadan region, Yakutia and Chukotka appealed to the President of the Russian Federation with a proposal to allow young pilots to work in the northern regions of the Russian Federation instead of military service. This is how regional heads want to solve the problem of the shortage of pilots on regional flights.

All this probably means that conscripts from Crimea will soon be able to choose a job in the defense industry.

Let us recall that due to the general crisis in the defense industry and in the space industry, Russia lost its second launch vehicle with a foreign satellite in a row - due to problems in the third stage of the Proton, the satellite was unable to enter orbit.

Despite the fact that young people have begun to enter the defense industry more actively, there is still an acute shortage of qualified personnel in the industry - there has not been an influx of young people for 20 years, and old engineers are physically dying out; they often simply have no one to pass on their experience to. Experts also talk about the loss of a number of scientific and technological schools in the country’s universities. In addition, something needs to be done with the top management of defense holdings, which is focused on obtaining maximum and quick profits with minimal returns.

Vedomosti, meanwhile, reports today that nine student teams will come to work at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, the construction of which also has problems associated with the unpreparedness of commercial organizations in the Russian Federation to carry out projects of such complexity.
