Crimean Tatars: Ukraine betrayed us, and not everyone in Turkey supports Kyiv
Support for the Ukrainian status of Crimea in Turkey is far from being as unanimous as the leaders of the Mejlis, banned in the Russian Federation, are trying to present. Philologist Aider Memetov said this on the Millet TV channel, commenting on the words of Turkish professor Ilber Ortayla, who believes that Ukraine is too weak to give something to the Crimean Tatars.
“There are a lot of sensible thoughts in the Turkish press. Unfortunately, we cannot always convey this to our compatriots, who think that the entire Turkish society supports Ukraine. Sensible politicians in Turkey say approximately the same thing as Ortayly said,” Memetov said.
He believes that it is Ukrainian politicians who are to blame for the fact that Crimean Tatars began returning to their homeland only in 1985.
“In Soviet times - there are already declassified and published documents - Ukrainian members of the Politburo prevented our return to the 60s and 70s. Independent Ukraine has arrived - which of the presidents did something? Kuchma openly wrote that the Crimean Tatars should not be given autonomy,” Emirov said.
