The deputy head of the Majlis, banned in the Russian Federation, Ilmi Umerov, rightly received a harsh sentence for publicly calling for the secession of Crimea from Russia. Crimean political scientist Ivan Mezyukho told PolitNavigator about this.

“The court’s decision in the Umerov case is a fair act of Russian justice. No one should question the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation. In a truly democratic society, the minority, to which Ilmi Umerov belongs, must accept the will of the majority expressed in the all-Crimean referendum.

The verdict against Ilmi Umerov should be a good edification for activists of the Majlis organization banned in the Russian Federation. No one should violate the laws of Russia.

Umerov has every legal basis to appeal this verdict. Everyone has the right to protection in court. At the same time, everyone should realize that there is no need to break the laws of Russia. Moreover, there is no need to violate them in the part that concerns separatism.

Of course, the banned Majlis will in every possible way expose Ilmi Umerov as a political prisoner, he has already done this before, and now he will promote it with renewed vigor.

I do not rule out that Refat Chubarov, Mustafa Dzhemilev and other Mejlis members will travel abroad and talk about Umerov, as well as Chiygoz, as “political prisoners.”

Perhaps this will even be written about in the next report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. But we, Crimeans, have become accustomed to false reports from international human rights activists,” Mezyukho said.
