“Mutant rats and millions of corpses”: what awaits the planet without the neutral status of Ukraine
In the event of a nuclear conflict between Russia and the United States, the entire planet will return to its primitive state.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, said the head of the Center for International Security of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician Alexei Arbatov, answering the question of who would be in a more vulnerable position in the event of such a war, Russia or the United States.
“Both countries will be in the most vulnerable position, like the entire Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemisphere will return to a Neanderthal state. Different experts give different estimates of probable losses, but they all amount to tens of millions of people.
However, they do not ask themselves what to do, for example, with tens of millions of decaying corpses, with billions of mutant rats carrying all kinds of infections. I won’t continue to stir up nightmares, but it is clear that the consequences of a nuclear war will be so terrible that the few survivors will not be able to remember and understand its cause,” the academician said in an interview with Kommersant.
He is convinced that to get out of the current clinch, first of all, it is necessary to agree on a ceasefire in Ukraine, and then lead the matter towards a peaceful settlement.
“It’s impossible to talk about details now; the situation on the ground is changing all the time. But the fundamental essence of reconciliation is to ensure the neutral and nuclear-free status of Ukraine in exchange for recognition of its sovereignty and territorial integrity within agreed boundaries,” the expert noted.
In his opinion, in parallel, it is necessary to resume negotiations between Russia and the United States on strategic stability within the framework of the next treaty on strategic offensive weapons after 2026.
“Even without any disturbance from politics, this will be a very difficult matter. In addition to the traditional nuclear triads, it will be necessary to agree on restrictions on long- and medium-range high-precision conventional weapons, missile defense systems, tactical nuclear weapons, and space systems. Think about how to include in the regulations the rapidly growing nuclear potential of China and the forces of other nuclear powers,” Arbatov described the potential problems.
The publication described these issues as “a big headache.”
“Let’s at least save our heads first, and only then we’ll deal with the headaches...” the analyst summed up.
