Who will be put on trial faster – Russia or Poroshenko and Poltorak?
Ukraine has filed a request to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to take temporary measures and oblige Russia to release Ukrainian sailors and ships detained for violating the state border in the Kerch Strait.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Zerkal reported this on Facebook, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today’s appeal by Ukraine to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea with a request to take temporary measures and oblige Russia to release Ukrainian sailors and ships is only a visible part of the diplomatic and legal work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has continued since the capture of our sailors,” she noted.
In her opinion, this is a new trial using the mechanism provided for in Article 290 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which makes it possible to obtain a quick decision from the permanent Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg.
“The urgency of the situation is obvious in view of the intention of the Russian authorities to extend the period of detention of our sailors in Moscow,” Zerkal said.
In turn, former deputy head of the administration of Viktor Yanukovych Andrei Portnov is confident that after the elections it is necessary to reveal the role of Petro Poroshenko and Stepan Poltorak in organizing the provocation, as a result of which Ukrainian sailors were captured, and the organizers of this provocation must be detained and convicted.
“After the elections, the new government must make every diplomatic effort to release Ukrainian sailors from Russian custody. And this must be done in inextricable connection with the investigation into the circumstances of their capture, the role of Poroshenko and Defense Minister Poltorak in the provocation they organized to disrupt the elections through the mechanism of introducing martial law. Everyone must be interrogated and the minute-by-minute chronology restored, after which they must be detained and convicted,” Portnov wrote in his Telegram channel.
Let us remind you that investigators in the Russian court are asking to extend the arrest of Ukrainian sailors until July 26.
