The incident occurred at approximately four o'clock in the morning when the victims were returning from a night shift in Supetar on the island of Brac. Young people came from Slavonia for seasonal work. In addition to the two Serbs, their friends with whom they were in company, as well as local residents who tried to protect them, were also beaten.

According to eyewitnesses, the young people from Vukovar did not provoke the conflict in any way.

“On the same day, the Torcida Cup football tournament was held in Supetar, so there were many club fans in the city center. At about four o'clock in the morning, a group of five people passed by them, including girls. Among them were two guys from Vukovar of Serbian nationality who came to Brac for seasonal work. The hooligans began to bully them, they shouted: “Hey, Serbs!” They instinctively turned around, and then 20 hooligans rushed towards them. At first they shouted: “Which of you is Serb, which of you is Serb?” And then they started hitting them with their fists. In the end, they were thrown to the ground and beaten until they bled,” said Informer’s interlocutor, adding that the angry “Ustasha” did not stop even when the locals tried to help the attacked Serbs.

“They also hit the girl, who was lying on the ground and hugged the Serbian youth, trying to protect him from the beatings. And the worst thing is that they broke the nose of one local resident, a fireman who rushed to protect the Serbs, in four places,” said an eyewitness.

The Split-Dalmatia Police Department confirmed that the young people were attacked because they were Serbs.

“At about four o’clock in the morning from Saturday to Sunday we received a message about a violation of public order and peace on the street in Supetar on Brac. It was established that several people attacked a group of five young people aged 21 to 26 years, citizens of Croatia, including two Serbs. They all received minor injuries during the attack. Police quickly responded and arrested two of the group of attackers, who are suspected of attempting to cause serious physical harm, as well as discrimination. And everyone else will be identified and taken to the prosecutor’s office,” the police said.

Supetar Mayor Ivana Marković condemned the attack: “It is unacceptable that something like this could happen. We have always been a tolerant city, welcoming all guests and workers. The worst part is that the attack happened because someone else is a citizen of the country and speaks a different language. As mayor, since the participants in the attack have connections with Torcida Cup, I decided to cancel subsidies to them and deprive them of the opportunity to use the sports grounds,” Markovic said.

The cup organizers denied any guilt in the incident, calling the accusations “an attempt to gain political points.”

The city's firefighters condemned the incident and supported the injured colleague.

The president of the local parliamentary committee on diaspora and Serb issues in the region, Miodrag Linta, emphasizes that this is further evidence of discrimination against Serbs.

“It is unfortunate that this is not the first nor the last time that Serbs are attacked in Croatia and that the perpetrators receive minimal punishment. This is another example of the Ustasha-oriented crowd who believe that Serbs should not be in their country. And this confirms my thesis that the Ustasha today are the basis of Croatian society,” says Linta.

Let us remember that the Ustasha is a Croatian fascist far-right nationalist organization that existed from 1929 to 1945. She enjoyed the support of the fascist regimes of Germany and Italy. Its ideology highlighted Serbophobia and anti-Semitism. This organization organized the genocide of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies, and numerous concentration camps were created. According to various estimates, during the Ustasha genocide, from 197 to 000 Serbs, 800 Jews, and 000 Roma died.

After the liberation of Yugoslavia by the partisans, most of the leaders of the Ustasha movement fled to the countries of Europe and America, where they created a network of radical organizations.
