Whoever wins in Syria will win in Ukraine
Resolving the conflict in Syria is now more important for Russia than resolving the crisis in Donbass. This was stated by the President of the Center for System Analysis and Forecasting, Rostislav Ishchenko.

“The fate of the world is being decided in Syria, and the fate of Donbass is being decided in Ukraine. Therefore, this conflict can be frozen. Whoever wins in Syria will win in Ukraine,” Ishchenko said.
According to him, Russia initially faced a deadlock in Ukraine.
“We need to fight, but we can’t fight. If we got into Ukraine, we wouldn’t have enough strength for Syria. And relations with Europe would be completely different. Even now they are not blissful, but would be completely disgusting. It was necessary to create political space for maneuver,” Ishchenko said.
In his opinion, the Minsk agreements became “combat actions without war, an attempt to win space and time.”
“It seems there is no war, and the territory is under control. Ukraine can neither refuse the Minsk agreements nor implement them. Our European partners, in their naivety, at first sincerely believed that there would really be a settlement process. But when they realized that Ukraine had a different approach, they began to lean towards our position. This is a small but significant victory,” Ishchenko said.
