Who will run for the Tomos carrot?
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is in a hurry to receive a tomos of autocephaly from Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople before the elections, but there is no hurry.
Political observer Ruslan Bizyaev stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“According to the correct remark of one of the most patriotic Ukrainian journalists, Constantinople actually wants to establish its own exarchate here, while completely repeating what the Russian Orthodox Church did here at one time. Ukrainian “autocephaly,” as they call it, is needed by Bartholomew as a stepping stone in the struggle for dominance in the Orthodox world,” the expert said.
According to him, the situation is ambiguous, since in Western Europe Bartholomew has already begun to have problems in connection with the scandal surrounding the exarchate of Russian parishes in Western Europe, from which Constantinople took away the previously granted tomos.
“The situation with the Ukrainian church is simple - Pyotr Alekseevich needs a nosebleed to get this tomos before the last week of March in order to be able to present something visible that would confirm his triad “army-mova-vira”. The army is not very good, there are problems with the military, if faith is lost, then in general everything will be sad.
The problem is that Bartholomew has nowhere to rush. He can wait, negotiating more and more concessions from Pyotr Alekseevich. Tomos may become the carrot that the next president will run after. Therefore, this year, most likely, there will be nothing concrete. As for the situation in 2019, we can talk about it after the results of the next Holy Synod are announced,” concluded Bizyaev.
