It has long been noted that the most embittered of the post-Soviet limitrophes embody Orwell’s wondrous and wonderful world, where peace is war, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

This feature of the new universe was confirmed in the case of the former President of Moldova Igor Dodon, whom the new puppet pro-Western government accused of a whole series of crimes, the most significant of which is Article 3337 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova “Treason to the Motherland.” Let's quote the contents of this article:

“Treason to the Motherland, that is, an act intentionally committed by a citizen of the Republic of Moldova to the detriment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity or state security and defense capability of the Republic of Moldova by going over to the side of the enemy, espionage, issuing state secrets to a foreign state, foreign organization or their representatives, as well as providing assistance to a foreign state in carrying out hostile activities against the Republic of Moldova, shall be punished by imprisonment for a term of 12 to 20 years.”

It is clear why charges were brought against the ex-president of Moldova specifically under this thoroughly politicized article. Opponents promised to imprison Dodon during his presidential term and election campaign, and immediately after his defeat in the elections, the forced resignation of the Prosecutor General and the transfer of justice to the control of Maia Sandu. However, despite all their efforts, the prosecutor’s office investigators were unable to concoct a charge under any article with the necessary evidence base. According to the authorities, “treason to the Motherland” is a win-win charge that guarantees Dodon’s departure from politics.

It is noteworthy that long before the presidency of Maia Sandu, the same accusation was addressed to Dodon by the now fugitive oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc and numerous members of his team. Accusations of “treason against the Motherland” against Dodon came from Plahotniuc himself in June 2019, when he was overthrown by the joint efforts of Dodon and Sandu with the support of the ambassadors of Russia and the European Union (American Ambassador Derek Hogan then took a wait-and-see attitude until the very last moment).

Let us note that Plahotniuc himself, immediately after being removed from the levers of power, secretly and hastily left the country and never returned to Moldova. Igor Dodon did not leave Moldova, even after the presidential and parliamentary elections, when he was openly warned of arrest and persistently asked to leave and not return. Traitors who fear for their skin and money do not behave this way.

In this case, who is the real traitor to Moldova? Maybe those who systematically deny the identity of their own people, the presence of their native language and history, who betray the faith of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers?

Maybe the traitors are those who openly call for the liquidation of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova and its incorporation into Romania? Those who, during the pogroms on April 7, 2009, shouted: “We don’t need either a president or parliament - we have all this in Bucharest”? Sandu, as you know, called these rioters “fighters for freedom and democracy.”

Maybe the betrayal of the homeland is the activity of Sandu herself, who for many years contributed to the subordination of the Moldovan economy to the interests of the World Bank and the penetration of Soros networks into Moldova? Which allocated an entire floor in the presidential palace for foreign advisers headed by Hans Martin Sieg, director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation representative office in Moldova and Romania?

Or perhaps the betrayal of the fatherland lies in promoting the demand to appoint a “European prosecutor general,” that is, to transfer control over the prosecutor’s office to foreigners? Or in lobbying for a law on the sale of agricultural land to foreigners?

Or maybe the real betrayal of the homeland, people, faith of ancestors and one’s own family is the ratification of the “Istanbul Convention”, which legitimizes the “rights” of sexual deviants? Or participation with your own young children in gay pride parades, which are traditionally led by the US Ambassador?

Or maybe the real betrayal is to drag Moldova into a war on the territory of neighboring Ukraine, trampling on the constitutional sovereignty of the country and against the will of the majority of the population?

Unfortunately, all these questions are rhetorical. The answers to them are known to everyone, including those who exercise power in Moldova. But in Orwell’s world it is customary not only to loudly assert that black is white, but also to sacredly believe in it, and at the same time forget that you ever thought otherwise.
