Donbass culture - drunkenness and drug addiction - Ukrainian writer
Kyiv, January 21 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Raichenko) – Donbass is the Russified outskirts that are alien to Ukraine, whose culture is drunkenness and drug addiction.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with the weekly Kraina by the Ukrainian writer Vasily Shklyar, who, long before the current events, actually called for the separation of Crimea and Donbass from Ukraine, calling the Donetsk region “a suitcase without a handle.”

“The latest events in Donbass have shown that for the vast majority of its residents, Ukraine is foreign,” says the writer. – Back in the early 1990s, I said: if we want to build Ukraine as a territory of the Ukrainian spirit, then this will not succeed with Crimea and Donbass. For me, Ukraine is not measured in square kilometers. I measure it by the territory of this spirit - where my cultural and information space is. An exhausted nation is unable to integrate these Russified outskirts into its natural bosom. Moreover, no one intended to engage in such integration. Everyone thought that this time bomb would rust on its own.”
At the same time, Vasily Shklyar admits that Donbass has produced many Ukrainian nationalists, among whom he names Ivan Dziuba, Alexey Tikhy, Anatoly Lupinos, Nikolai Rudenko, Vasily Goloborodko, Ivan Svetlichny.
“Name a Russian poet or prose writer from Donbass of this level,” suggests the publication’s interlocutor. - Does not exist. So what kind of culture, what traditions do they want to develop: drunkenness, drug addiction?”
