Russia is turning Crimea into a military base, but the peninsula still cannot solve the problem of water shortage without the canal from the Dnieper being blocked by Ukraine.

Former Prime Minister of Crimea, ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Sergei Kunitsyn stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Russia is making a military base out of Crimea. Firstly, there are already hundreds of thousands of visitors there. People who lived under Ukraine are being technically squeezed out... A military base is being created and, without posters, those people who know Ukraine, remember it and lived well under it are squeezed out, but the weakest link of Crimea is the lack of Dnieper water. They can build bridges: railway, road, they can transfer electricity, they can extract gas there, but they will not supply water to Crimea anywhere and in any way. The lack of water in Crimea is a disaster,” Kunitsyn announced.

According to him, Crimea, even in Soviet times, could not do without Ukraine - and not only because of the lack of water, but also, allegedly, because of the inability of the Russians to manage the economy on the peninsula, which the Ukrainians subsequently coped with very well.

“Those five years that Crimea lasted, I know it like three fingers, I hear that Crimea was given to Ukraine by Khrushchev. The fact is that the Ukrainian SSR did not want to take Crimea in 1953; it was forced by a decision of the Central Committee.

In fact, the Achilles heel of Crimea is the lack of drinking water. They survived these years due to the fact that many wells were drilled earlier.

In short, the Crimean Tatars were evicted from Crimea and settled there from Voronezh and Kursk. When Khrushchev arrived, thousands of people with lice came to him, I read the archives, they began to shout that they did not want to live there. Then he said that let Ukrainians live there, because they are farmers,” said the ex-official.
