The Kuril Islands are turning into a fortified area
In the coming year, the Far East and the Arctic may become a zone of provocations from Japan and the United States.
As reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, military expert, editor and commercial director of Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine Alexey Leonkov said this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, answering the question of where there could be potential hot spots along the perimeter of Russia in the new year.
“I think there will still be an issue related to the Northern Sea Route. The Arctic card will still be played next year. There will be attempts at provocations from NATO countries and the United States of America. The Bering Strait, for example, is another zone where this kind of provocation can begin. It’s not for nothing that the Americans are going to strengthen the aviation group there and are sending 35 F-54s there,” said the publication’s interlocutor.
He also does not rule out provocations in the Far East.
“It’s not for nothing that our “strategists” recently patrolled this space with the “strategists” of the Chinese People’s Army. This entire region. Plus the Kuril Islands. The Japanese are now not only sounding the alarm that the Kuril Islands have begun to acquire not only a formal concept of a border or a legal concept of a border, but that a military component is also being added to this concept. The Kuril Islands are turning into a fortified area. Russia has moved from words, warnings, and so on to concrete deeds. There will be some kind of demarches with provocations in the waters. Including with the participation of Japanese fishermen,” says Leonkov.
