“Kutuzov burned Moscow!” – in Kyiv they remembered the feat of the field marshal
The former mayor of Kyiv, Alexander Omelchenko, claims that he tried to prevent the renaming as part of a campaign to “decommunize” Kutuzov Street, citing the fact that the field marshal allowed Moscow to burn during the Napoleonic War.
“There was such a case, deputies sat down, and the radicals said that Kutuzov should [be renamed]. And I say: “Why Kutuzova? He burned Moscow, don’t need him!” Well, is it really possible to do this?” – Omelchenko said on the air of the 112 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Ukrainian-speaking Omelchenko admitted that decommunization has become an instrument of de-Russification.
“Decommunization should be in people’s minds, in literature, in art, in poetry, in our national Ukrainian song - I agree. But when is decommunization criminally used in de-Russification, because Russia has been an aggressor for five years? The first generalissimo Suvorov renamed the streets, what does he have to do with it? Kutuzov’s street is being renamed,” the ex-mayor was indignant.
