The residence and work permit for highly qualified foreigners from so-called “third countries” is called a “Blue Card”. It was introduced in 2012 at the EU level. Since then, more than 62 foreigners have received such documents in Germany.
Blue cards are issued to specialists who have an employment contract with companies in the EU.
As of mid-2017, the most blue cards received were Indians (8212), Chinese (3217), Russians (2901), Ukrainians (1942) and US citizens (1560). Germany issues about 85 percent of all Blue Cards in the EU.
Prerequisites for obtaining a blue card in Germany include completed higher education and a salary of at least 50 euros per year, including taxes.
For specialists in natural sciences, engineers, doctors and IT specialists, an annual salary of 39 euros is enough to obtain this residence permit.
