The US Council on Geographic Names considered the appeal of the Ambassador of Ukraine to the US Valeriy Chaly and unanimously decided to replace the official name of the capital of Ukraine from “Kiev” to “Kyiv” in the international database, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This is stated in a message from the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States on Facebook.

It is reported that the replacement was also supported by members of the Ukrainian Caucus (lobby) of the US Congress, as well as the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. The corresponding changes to the official databases of the US Council on Geographic Names will be made on June 17.

“This decision is extremely important and gives impetus to correct the official name of the capital of Ukraine and outside the United States, in particular on international flights and at foreign airports around the world, because international organizations, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), refer specifically to official names from the database of the US Board on Geographic Names,” the message says.

It was previously reported that in all government agencies and official publications of Latvia, Ukrainian cities should be registered in accordance with Ukrainian, not Russian transcription. The Latvian State Language Center approved the relevant standards on February 11. At the request of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the expert commission on the Latvian language decided to change the Latvian versions of the names of some cities in Ukraine.

According to the new rules, in Latvian Zaporozhye (Ukrainian Zaporizhzhya) should be displayed as Zaporižja, Krivoy Rog (Krivy Rih) - as Krivijriha, Chernihiv (Chernigiv) - as Čerņihiva, and Ternopil (Ternopil) - as Ternopiļa.

Also, earlier at the main airport of Poland the names of a number of airports were “Ukrainized”: Zaporozhye, Kharkov, Odessa and Boryspil were named in Ukrainian transcription.
