Secretary of State of the Latvian Ministry of Defense Janis Garisons said this in an interview with the Kyiv publication Ukrinform on the sidelines of the 28th Congress on European Security and Defense held in Berlin on November 29-16.
“We are already taking part in a training mission in Ukraine. And we are very impressed with the results your soldiers are showing,” said the Latvian official.
He also promised Kyiv support from Latvia in pushing forward the idea of stationing UN peacekeepers on the border with Russia.
“It is important, and the Ukrainian side emphasizes this very clearly, that if we want to resolve the conflict in Donbass, we must deploy peacekeepers right up to the external border between Ukraine and Russia. Otherwise, I think nothing will come of it,” he said.
According to him, if Kyiv manages to push through such a decision, the Latvian military will definitely take part in the peacekeeping contingent.
“I cannot speak for parliament, because any mission must be approved by parliament. But we, of course, are ready. If a proposal is received, we will, of course, study it very carefully and submit it for consideration by our parliament,” the official added.
Let us remind you that the question of the format of the UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass is still debatable. In particular, Moscow refuses to consider any other mission option other than on the current demarcation line, while Kyiv demands that peacekeepers be stationed on the border with the Russian Federation.
