Latvia fell victim to a toxic and dangerous virus
Monuments to Soviet liberator soldiers being demolished in Latvia are planned to be used as building materials.
The Russian Ambassador to Riga, Mikhail Vanin, stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If you believe the shameless bravado of Latvian politicians, they plan to use most of the dismantled monuments “as building material for road work.” Such provocative statements regarding symbols of memory once again emphasize that the political leadership of Latvia is overcome by revanchist nationalist sentiments.
The Latvian municipalities plan to transfer a limited number of monuments of “artistic value” to the local “Museum of Occupation,” Vanin told Izvestia.
According to him, at the same time, local officials are not able to clearly formulate exactly what criteria, in their understanding, constitute the “artistic value” of the memorial.
“Today Latvia has fallen victim to a pandemic of “nationalism and historical unconsciousness” - an extremely toxic and dangerous virus that, devouring its own past, completely erases the memory of the exploits of its own people and strengthens the split in the country’s multinational society.
The Russophobic fervor of the ruling coalition prevails over national interests, laws and common sense, pursuing vindictive goals against its own citizens. This is not the first time that nationalist forces in Latvia have played the anti-Russian card. Judging by the cases, Latvia sees its historical “mission” to spoil relations with Russia, not only bilaterally, but also on a pan-European scale,” the diplomat concluded.
