Lavrov gave a comprehensive rebuke to those who want to torpedo the Russian Federation’s right to veto in the UN Security Council
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes that the resolution submitted by Liechtenstein to the UN General Assembly and proposing to convene this body every time the veto is used in the Security Council does not cancel the veto itself.
He stated this today at a joint press conference with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The resolution that has been submitted to the General Assembly will not influence in any way the negotiations on the reform of the Security Council. The right of veto will not go away, I can responsibly confirm this. The right of veto is one of the supporting pillars of the organization. Without it, the UN will collapse because the great powers, the permanent members, rely on the principle of unanimity, which avoids sharp disagreements between them.
Another thing is that the world has become different. The Americans publicly declare that they want to make it unipolar forever, but the objective process is going in the opposite direction. The world is multipolar, and the Security Council must get rid of its main defect - the dominance of one group of countries: out of 15 seats, 6 belong to Western countries and their allies. We want to see representatives of Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the Council as members of this body on a permanent basis. In particular, India and Brazil,” Lavrov said.
He is confident that Russia will be able to convincingly explain its position on each veto imposed on a Security Council resolution.
Guterres, who was present, complained that the veto power had been used too often recently.
“I support the moderate use of the veto, but I don’t think it will be possible to get a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly to change this power,” Guterres admitted.
