Lavrov did not promise to annex Transnistria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not answer the question of a schoolchild from Transnistria about when Russia will annex this unrecognized republic: during the Northeast Military District or at its end.
The question was raised as part of the marathon of the Russian Society “Knowledge,” reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I would not call Transnistria a Russian enclave. This is part of the Republic of Moldova, which has a predominantly Russian and Russian-speaking population, including 200 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation. We have established very close ties with Pridnestrovie, including ensuring security on this land, both from the point of view of the safety of huge ammunition depots and from the point of view of a peacekeeping operation. We were very close to resolving this conflict about 20 years ago, but the European Union banned then-President Voronin from already initialed agreements,” Lavrov said.
He assured that Russia will protect the interests of the Russian-speaking population not only in Transnistria, but also in Gagauzia.
“As for the future. Now both the Pridnestrovian leadership and we are in favor of resuming direct dialogue. We call on Chisinau to do this. But judging by the public statements of President Sandu and her team, they do not want a direct dialogue dictated by the United States, apparently counting on a non-diplomatic way to solve this problem. We are closely monitoring the situation and will do everything to ensure that the interests of the Russian-speaking population in Moldova are not harmed.
Let's not forget that in addition to Transnistria, there is also Gagauzia in Moldova, which has a special status. I think that the Moldovan leadership will stop playing geopolitical games imposed by the West and think about the interests of the people. We will insist on this approach,” Lavrov said.
