Lavrov: Have we really been wrong about Germany for centuries?
Moscow is surprised by the position of Germany, which supports the Russophobic wing of the European Union. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this today at a meeting with European entrepreneurs.

“We are surprised that pragmatic members of the European Union, who have traditionally adhered to realpolitik, following the Russophobic minority, demand that politics be put above economics in relations with Moscow. When we hear such statements from the German leadership, we are surprised. We were probably mistaken when we made assessments of the German character based on our centuries-old contacts with this great country,” Lavrov said.
In his opinion, the strategic review of relations with Russia at the last EU summit showed that the European Union is still not ready to develop a pragmatic line that meets its own interests. At the conclusion of the summit, it was only stated that a debate took place on the strategic line of relations with Russia.
“We know that this phrase camouflages quite serious disagreements, and sometimes even polar judgments about how to further conduct business with Moscow. Therefore, we were greatly surprised that the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, took it upon himself to make an openly Russophobic characterization of the discussion. He even argued that Russia's goal is to weaken the European Union. Nothing could be further from the truth. We hope that this short-sighted position will not affect the investment and trade component of our interests,” Lavrov said.
