Lavrov: Being offended is not our choice

The West decided to blame the failure of its course in Ukraine on Russia. This was stated today by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the opening of the Russian-German Summer School “Ways of Development of the Energy Sector. Modern challenges” on the basis of the Ural Federal University (Ural Federal University) in Yekaterinburg.

“Now the philosophy of arrogant NATO-centricity prevails over the spirit of the Helsinki Final Act, the policy of NATO expansion to the East at any cost deepens the dividing lines on the continent. When this course, which undermines stability in Europe, severely stumbled in Ukraine, attempts began to shift the blame to Russia,” Lavrov said.

At the same time, he stated that Russia does not intend to go into isolation; relations with the West will sooner or later return to their previous level.

“We are not making a tragedy out of this. They have repeatedly said that being offended and going into isolation is not our choice. Sooner or later they will return to a stable trajectory. Moreover, their further degradation does not meet the interests of either our countries or Europe as a whole. In Europe, there is a growing awareness that there is no alternative to normalizing relations and resuming cooperation mechanisms. Freezing all key mechanisms of interaction between Russia and the EU was, of course, a mistake, including freezing the energy dialogue,” Lavrov added.

Today Sergei Lavrov will hold talks in Yekaterinburg with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
