Lavrov explained why Moscow entered into dialogue with the Taliban
Moscow went to a meeting with representatives of the Taliban movement banned in the Russian Federation, because they expressed their peaceful intentions, and it was time to end the conflict in the region.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this during a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Yes, we work with the Afghan government, with the former president, with Tajiks, Uzbeks and other ethnic groups. And we work with the Taliban.
Recently the Taliban leadership was in Moscow, our representative met with them. They have stated very clearly that they have no plans to create problems for Afghanistan's Central Asian neighbors, that they will continue to fight ISIS uncompromisingly.
And that they are ready to discuss the political structure of the state with other Afghans. Because before this everyone accused them of wanting to create some kind of Islamic emirate based on Sharia law,” he said.
Sergei Lavrov emphasized that the Taliban’s peace initiative should become an example for everyone, because it is time to end the crisis and uncertainty in Afghanistan.
“The statement I'm talking about sends a very clear signal that they are adequate people. And we must not try to maintain the current uncertainty for as long as possible (and there are forces in Kabul interested in this), we must think not about ourselves, but about our country.
And for this, it is necessary to start a dialogue with everyone, including the Taliban, as soon as possible,” the minister concluded.
