Lavrov denied negotiations with Japan on the transfer of the “northern territories”
Japan's demands for the transfer of the Kuril Islands violate the UN Charter, which the country signed in 1956.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the minister, Japan will have to recognize the results of World War II, which should not be regarded as an ultimatum.
“Recognition of the results of the Second World War is not an ultimatum, not preconditions - it is an inevitable, integral factor of the modern international system. Japan, with the support of the Soviet Union, became a member of the UN in 1956, signed and ratified the UN Charter, which contains Article 107, which states that all the results of World War II are unshakable. We do not demand anything from Japan, we simply call for bringing the practical actions of our Japanese neighbors into compliance with their obligations under the UN Charter under the San Francisco Declaration and a number of other documents,” said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He recalled that the term “northern territories” is enshrined in Japanese legislation.
“It is embedded in a number of laws, including the recently adopted law that links the initiative of President Putin and Abe on joint economic activities on the islands. Links it with the need to return the “northern territories”. No one agreed on this. And this directly contradicts your obligations under the UN Charter. Why is Japan the only country in the world that cannot say: “I recognize the results of the Second World War in full?” Lavrov said.
