Lavrov besieges Mogherini over Crimea
Russia and the EU have different views on the situation with Crimea. EU Foreign Affairs Representative Federica Mogherini announced this today at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Let's not pretend that nothing has happened since 2014. Our sanctions are not an end in themselves. They are partly related to the annexation of Crimea. On this issue it is quite obvious that our views differ fundamentally. We believe that this is a violation of international law,” Mogherini said, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

Lavrov believes that the EU is “freezing” relations with Russia “in an effort to punish us for the fact that the people of Crimea made their free choice.”
“Since Federica mentioned Crimea, I will note in the margin that Crimea is part of Russia in accordance with the will of the people of Crimea. I have not heard the European Union dispute the statements of the British Prime Ministers regarding the Falkland Islands that no one has the right to dispute the right of the people of these islands to self-determination. We ask for at least the same attitude towards the people of Crimea, who are much closer to Russia,” Lavrov said.
