Lavrov demanded to rein in Ukraine
The Ukrainian authorities, not giving a damn about the Venice Commission, are pursuing discriminatory initiatives that not only contradict Kyiv’s international obligations, but also violate the Constitution of Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this in his address to the UN Human Rights Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It cannot but be surprising that some Western colleagues, who profess to support democracy, deliberately turn a blind eye to the flagrant suppression of basic human rights in Ukraine. The laws adopted there “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”, “On education” and the bills “On Media” and “On Combating Disinformation” that have now been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada are openly discriminatory in nature, trample on the rights of national minorities, and de facto establish state censorship.
These innovations not only contradict Kyiv’s international obligations, but also violate the Constitution of Ukraine. Despite the fact that the Venice Commission confirmed their discriminatory nature, the Ukrainian authorities have not taken and are not going to take any measures to correct this situation,” Lavrov said.
“I consider it fundamentally important that the Human Rights Council assess this unacceptable situation and demand strict respect for the rights of all national minorities without exception. Let’s not forget that this is also required by the Minsk agreements approved by the UN Security Council, to which there is no alternative,” added the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
