Lavrov invited the West to leave Assad behind and take care of Libya
Statements by Syrian General Zaher al-Sakat, who defected in 2013, that Bashar al-Assad still had stockpiles of chemical weapons were “stimulated either by carrots or sticks.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters about this today.

“The total volume of chemical weapons seized in Syria and subject to destruction amounted to 1,3 thousand tons. The general said that Assad had 2 thousand tons. The question is why he was silent for 3 years. Any person understands that the general was stimulated either by a carrot or a stick,” Lavrov said.
He recalled that in Libya there was actually a shortage of chemical weapons in the amount of 200 tons.
“Libya has now turned into a gateway; this fact cannot be taken lightly. But our Western partners do not pay attention to the fact that 200 tons of toxic substances there have seemingly evaporated. It’s better for them to deal with real problems,” Lavrov said.
Today, the British newspaper Telegraph writes that General Zaher al-Sakat, who deserted from the Syrian army in 2013, claims that the Syrian authorities hid several hundred tons of chemical weapons from the OPCW, while he did not provide any evidence, and he was no longer in Syria three years.
