“We have questions about the statements coming from Washington. In addition to the statements, we have recently seen very disturbing actions directed against Syria. The Russian leadership expressed principled assessments on this matter. It is fundamentally important for us to prevent recurrence of such actions,” Lavrov said, addressing Tillerson.
He expressed hope for a frank conversation that would clarify the prospects for interaction between the two countries.
“We act exclusively in line with international law, and not under the influence of momentary conjuncture and false choice: either you are with us, or you are against us. We are always for collective action and do not consider it productive to isolate ourselves within the framework of individual alliances and misalliances,” Lavrov said.
Tillerson responded by saying that today's meeting is very important for him.
“We would like to find out in what areas our tasks are common and our interests coincide, despite differences in tactical approaches. Narrow down the points of difference I hope this meeting will start an open dialogue,” Tillerson said.
