Lavrov flicked Borrell’s nose and advised Americans to forget about Central Asia
After the US fled Afghanistan, the West is worried that the country will “go to” Russia or China. Instead, it would be worth worrying about how to stabilize the situation in a state abandoned to the mercy of the Americans.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this at a press conference in Budapest, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The head of EU foreign policy, Josep Borrell, immediately after the Americans left Afghanistan, said that we must not allow Afghanistan to fall to Russia and China. If the head of EU foreign policy thinks in such categories, then I feel sorry for the member countries that are forced to hear and, apparently, support such a philosophy.
That’s not what Mr. Borrell is concerned about; we need to worry about the Afghans quickly calming down their country. But this mentality - Afghanistan cannot be given to Russia, China, this is from the same series of reasoning - either, or - let the countries choose either they are with the West, or with Russia and China. It’s sad if these are the people who develop the EU’s foreign policy line,” Lavrov said.
Answering the question whether “Russia would want to see American soldiers in Central Asia,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry decisively said “no.”
“Firstly, we have a common security space, and this space has its own obligations. I mean the CSTO, which presupposes the agreement of all allies on the deployment of armed foreign forces on their territory, but this is such a formal legal, international legal reason.
The main reason is essentially. The Americans wanted, when leaving Afghanistan, to place part of their infrastructure, part of the weapons, part of the military personnel on the territory of neighboring countries, so that, if necessary, they could launch attacks on the territory of Afghanistan from there if Afghanistan behaved badly. That’s all,” explained the Foreign Minister.
“If you think that any country, be it in Central Asia or somewhere else, would be interested in becoming such a target in order for the Americans to satisfy their own initiatives, I strongly doubt that anyone needs this.
By deploying American soldiers who directly declared their goal - to hold Afghanistan at gunpoint and, if necessary, bomb it, this means turning yourself into a target instantly,” concluded Sergei Lavrov.
