Lavrov is surprised why Poroshenko is not enthusiastic about the Russian initiative for UN peacekeepers in Donbass

The initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to send UN peacekeepers to Donbass is related to the need to implement the Minsk agreements.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters about this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Our proposal is as follows: so that OSCE representatives can conscientiously, clearly and effectively monitor the implementation of the Minsk agreements, let’s give them armed guards, the composition of which will be determined by the parties to the conflict (Kiev, Donetsk and Lugansk). These are not UN forces, but a mission to protect OSCE observers. This is in full accordance with the logic of the Minsk agreements,” Lavrov said.

The minister explains the resistance of Ukrainian politicians to Putin’s initiative by Ukraine’s reluctance to implement the Minsk agreements.

“The Ukrainian side insists that peacekeepers be stationed on the border with Russia. But the Minsk agreements say that the Ukrainian government receives control over the border by fulfilling everything that President Poroshenko signed up for. Therefore, I do not see any contradictions between Ukraine and Russia, but I see a contradiction between Ukraine and the Minsk agreements,” Lavrov said.
