Lavrov: Ukraine is driving itself into a Russophobic corner
Appealing to the conscience of the Ukrainian authorities in connection with the situation in Donbass is a waste of time. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this today on the NTV channel, answering a TV presenter’s question why he doesn’t call his Ukrainian colleague Pavel Klimkin in order to urge Kyiv to end the war in an open conversation.

“Calling and appealing to conscience is a waste of time. What Ukrainians, including Klimkin, publicly state every day suggests that they want to drive themselves into a Russophobic corner from which it will be impossible to escape. They continue to blame everything on us, on Donbass, even despite the reports of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission, which has always tried to be neutral,” Lavrov said.
As the minister explained, although the OSCE SMM does not directly say that the shelling began from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the mission notes in its reports the directions from which these shellings originate.
“Even such neutrality clearly indicates that the mission understands that it is no longer possible to shield the Ukrainian army and these battalions,” Lavrov said.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that he is not going to leave communication with Klimkin.
“But such appeals to conscience, in my opinion, are simply meaningless, because Ukrainians on the public front have already become so engaged that they are unlikely to be able to steer back without strong pressure from Western sponsors,” Lavrov emphasized.
