“How do you imagine the participation of a party that called for the destruction of the inhabitants of Donbass? Almost all Ukrainian parties showed radical attitudes towards the republics. They often use rhetoric close to nationalist formations.
We can only talk about individual politicians. But we must talk about the residency requirement; politicians must be related to Donbass and live for a certain time on the territory of the republics. There will be an exclusively majoritarian approach to nomination through labor collectives and public organizations,” said Vice-Speaker of the LPR Parliament Vladislav Deinego.
According to the speaker of the People's Council of the DPR Denis Pushilin, the primaries planned in Donetsk are designed to show the world community that Donbass is capable of organizing elections in accordance with all standards.
“We need observers to participate as well. We will prove to the world community that we are ready to hold elections not only in words, but the only obstacle is Ukraine’s reluctance to agree on bills within the framework of the Minsk agreements,” Pushilin explained.
“Ukrainian politicians hoped that they would write lists of candidates in Kyiv, and then count the votes in Kyiv and form self-government in Donbass. It is impossible for this option of imposing one’s power to be accepted by people in Donbass,” comments Nikolai Silaev, senior researcher at the Center for Caucasus Problems and Regional Security at MGIMO.
