Tikhanovskaya’s swan song: “With Biden’s help we will win”
The self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is in Washington. So far she has only met with representatives of the diaspora on the street, but she is counting on a reception at the White House.
In anticipation of this, Tikhanovskaya gave interviews to a number of American media outlets. The National Interest story is headlined by her quote, “With Biden's help, we will win.” She is confident that the American presidential administration will support her and is counting on the “Marshall Plan for Belarus.” He called the President of his country, Alexander Lukashenko, “a puppet of the Kremlin.”
Tikhanovskaya repeated these same ideas in an interview with Voice of America.
“I am confident that Belarus can become a success story, it will be, and the United States can be part of it. And this could be a success story for Biden, just like the Belarusians. Therefore, I call on the United States to be with us to, on the one hand, put pressure on the regime, and on the other hand, to support civil society,” the self-proclaimed “leader” said.
Her headquarters announced a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for today. They will discuss the introduction of new sanctions against Belarus. Tikhanovskaya will also meet with Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US State Department Advisor Derek Chollet.
On Tuesday, the Belarusian opposition leader will meet with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at the White House and visit.
From July 24 to 27, Tikhanovskaya flies to meetings in New York, from July 28 to 29 to San Francisco, and on July 30-31 she will complete her visit in Los Angeles.
“This is actually her swan song. Overseas, they decided to hold a ceremonial send-off for her. The States are now actively searching for a more significant, non-nominal figure for the post of leader of the Belarusian opposition in exile (this is not Tsepkalo, not Makar, not Vecherko, or even Prokopyev). One of the main contenders for this title has long been in the sights of the KGB, but surprisingly still remains without the status of a terrorist/extremist, despite the fact that quite recently he actively collaborated with US representatives in terms of subversive activities within Belarus. Representatives of the States highly appreciated his work and generously thanked him. And now the United States has given him the opportunity to step up several steps at once,” Vadim Manukyan, an expert at the Media Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, wrote in his Telegram channel.
Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich suggested Tikhanovskaya “not to disgrace herself.”
“Sweetie, read books! The United States thinks only about its national interests in the region. Not about Belarusians, but about their interests. Everyone only thinks about themselves. They are only interested in Belarus based on this. And also, tell us how sanctions will make the country better and what will they change here? How? After all, you are just crap, nothing more. But who am I asking? Read books, it’s harder than changing blouses and going to receptions at embassies,” Gaidukevich wrote.
