On February 16, two Moldovan opposition parties - communists and socialists, which had been in conflict with each other for a long time, announced the creation of a permanent Anti-Crisis Bloc and a national platform of resistance, in which they called on all opposition forces to participate. The Anti-Crisis Block will be led by a council consisting of ten people - five from each party. Similar councils from representatives of both parties will be created at the local level.

The unified opposition platform will also be a collegial body, which can include any citizens, associations and trade unions, and all decisions in it will be made, again, collegially.

In addition, socialists and communists announced the creation of a shadow government, which, according to them, will analyze the activities of each ministry and make criticism and suggestions. According to the Vice-Speaker of Parliament, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Party of Socialists Vlad Batrynchi, the anti-crisis headquarters included experienced people who were involved in the economy and who can develop joint decisions.

Recently, only the lazy have not accused Moldovan socialists and communists of passivity against the backdrop of the crisis in Moldovan society and the activation of other opposition parties, in particular, the party of Ilan Shor and the “Civil Congress”, the ideological inspirer of which is the former adviser to ex-president Voronin Mark Tkachuk. In addition, the Party of Socialists found itself in a deep crisis due to the voluntary departure of its long-term leader, ex-President of Moldova Igor Dodon, from parliament and from the post of party leader. Today, two left-wing parties are trying to intercept the opposition agenda from their competitors on the left flank.

The left bloc has three main problems. The first is associated with the total control of the Action and Solidarity party over all government bodies in the country, including the courts and security forces.

There are enough figures in the ranks of socialists and communists against whom (or their close relatives) criminal cases can be opened, problems can be created for their business, or other measures of influence can be taken.

As practice shows, the Moldovan left opposition, especially the parliamentary forces, feel a lack of passion, have problems with party funds and are not capable of actions on the brink of a foul. Parliamentary drudgery is not capable of captivating anyone.

Their other problem is related to the absence in their ranks of rating leaders on a national scale who could lead the masses. As we noted above, Igor Dodon left politics (the question is - for how long?), the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, began his own political project (and with a clearly pro-Romanian overtone).

The only “heavyweight” in the left bloc is 80-year-old ex-president Vladimir Voronin, whose attitude towards him is ambiguous among left-wing politicians. It was he who in November 2003 disrupted the signing of a memorandum on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and over the next four years pursued a pro-Western policy. It was he and his adviser Mark Tkachuk who initiated the re-establishment of the anti-Russian GUAM bloc in 2005.

As for the rest of the deputies from the left bloc - the same Vlad Batrynchi, the other young members of the socialist executive committee we mentioned, as well as the famous television journalist Konstantin Starysh, who holds the post of secretary in the Communist Party - they have not yet managed to gain political weight.

Finally, the third danger is the apathy that has gripped Moldovan society. The people of this country have been so often disappointed by politicians on both the right and the left that it is difficult to captivate them with any political slogan.

And yet, the left bloc is the only truly opposition force in the Moldovan parliament. This political formation came out on top in public opinion polls for the first time since 2020. Their initiative, in light of the regular failures of the Sandu regime, deserves our close attention.
