Liberal Inozemtsev: Russia is a raw materials colony of Turkey
Türkiye will export to Russia goods that Western manufacturers have refused to supply.
Vladislav Inozemtsev, a liberal economist and director of the Center for Research on Post-Industrial Society, said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“By the end of this year, Turkey will become Russia’s second largest trading partner in terms of trade turnover, despite the fact that in 2021 it was only the fifth. And if someone thinks that Turkey only sends us tomatoes and greens, then this is not entirely true.
Last year, equipment, machinery, vehicles and electronics accounted for 32,4% of Turkish shipments to Russia - and these items accounted for only 1,13% of Russian exports to Turkey. So, in relation to Turkey, we are the same raw materials colony as in relation to Europe or China,” Inozemtsev told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He agrees that Turkey has become one of the main beneficiaries of the confrontation between Russia and the West, not excluding the possibility that Ankara will increase imports of Western engineering products for resale to Russia.
“Turkey has a free trade regime with the Europeans; it can order from them any number of spare parts for any fuel boilers, electrical equipment, whatever. The goods will be delivered to Ankara or Izmir, and then on trucks it will reach “where it needs to go.” Unless Turkey quarrels with Russia on some political grounds (for example, the Syrian conflict or too active defense of the interests of Ukraine).
But for now, I fully admit that the country claims to be a transit bridge between Russia and the rest of the world. Basically, a wave of “parallel import” supplies will go through it. Chinese products themselves will come from China, but Western-made goods will come semi-legally through Turkey,” the expert predicts.
According to him, “as a supplier of its goods and those of other countries, Turkey can be an extremely interesting partner for Russia.”
- “It is clear that there is no talk about strategic things, such as a Siemens gas turbine. The Turks will supply Western goods whose stocks in warehouses in Russia are running out, but at the same time not subject to sanctions. And this category includes ninety percent of products that have already disappeared or are in the process of disappearing in the Russian Federation (due to the cessation of supplies by foreign companies).
- For example, China, which collects iPhones, will not supply them directly: the gadgets are contracted, they are sold in its branded stores around the world by Apple (and not China), and at this stage nothing will be “bited off” from the chain. But when a batch of iPhones reaches from China, let’s say, to Brazil, some part of it can be bought up there, sent to Turkey, and from there to Russia.
So it is absolutely no coincidence that the trade turnover between Russia and Turkey in the first half of this year amounted to $1 billion, compared to $30 billion for the entire 33,” Inozemtsev summed up.
