Liberals in Moscow staged a homeless protest against Putin’s Constitution and picketed the FSB
Last weekend, pro-Western liberal oppositionists held unauthorized pickets in the Russian capital against popularly adopted amendments to the Russian Constitution. Another opposition rally was dedicated to supporting Pskov journalist Svetlana Prokopyeva, who is being tried for justifying terrorism.
The center of protest against amendments to the Russian Constitution was supposed to be Pushkinskaya Square in Moscow, which was announced by many pro-Western liberal Russian media. The action was planned to begin on July 1, the final day of voting on the amendments.
However, when journalists arrived at the site of the protest event at the appointed time, there were almost more of them than the participants of the event themselves. In total, according to various estimates, no more than two hundred people spoke out against the amendments to the Russian Constitution.
Initially, paddy wagons and police were present at the event, since the organizers presented it almost as “the overthrow of the regime.” However, due to the number of protesters, the Moscow police refrained from using force and even distributed masks to the “fighters.”
The most interesting thing is that protests against the amendments on Pushkin Square continue to this day, although the amendments came into force on July 4. Protests continue, both day and night, degenerating into a gathering of teenagers on a bench, who spend the night here and collect donations “for pizza and energy drinks.”
However, there were still some arrests in Moscow over the weekend. Thus, near the FSB building on Lubyanka, the pro-Western liberal community held an unauthorized picket in support of Pskov journalist Svetlana Prokopyeva.
There, those gathered held posters: “The FSB is not an editor. A journalist is not a terrorist,” “Freedom for Svetlana Prokopyeva.” This action brought together about four dozen people, the most active of whom, seventeen protesters, were detained, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Among them notorious liberal journalist and deputy of one of the central districts of Moscow Ilya Azar. Pickets in support of Prokopieva were also held in Nizhny Novgorod and, characteristically, at the Russian Embassy in Kyiv.
Now the prosecution is demanding seven years for journalist Prokopyeva for justifying terrorism. Let us recall that in November 2018, on the radio station “Echo of Moscow in Pskov,” this lady reacted in a rather unique way to the terrorist attack committed in Arkhangelsk by 17-year-old anarchist Mikhail Zhlobitsky. According to the press representative, the Russian state, through corruption and torture in the police, drove the terrorist to the decision to commit a suicide bombing.
At the same time, today it is known that before the incident in Arkhangelsk, Zhlobitsky did not have serious problems with law enforcement agencies, therefore, he did not know about their corruption and methods from personal experience.
The 17-year-old anarchist Zhlobitsky committed a terrorist attack near the lobby of the FSB building in Arkhangelsk in October 2018. As a result of the explosion, he was killed and three Russian intelligence service employees were seriously injured.
Today, a court hearing is scheduled to take place in Prokopyeva’s case, and the liberals will continue their pickets.
