Bosnian Croat leader: “Those who respect the Constitution of BiH must also respect the Republika Srpska”
The leader of the Bosnian Croats, chairman of the Croatian Democratic Union of BiH (HDZ BiH), Dragan Covic, said that if changes to the election law are not adopted, then there will be no elections in the fall.
Covic also said that when voting to change the electoral law, Bosnian Croats need the support of Bosnian Serbs, the PolitNaigator correspondent reports.
The real, and not the nominal leader of the Bosnian Croats, the chairman of the Croatian Democratic Union of BiH (HDZ BiH), Dragan Covic, held a fruitless meeting in Neum with the Bosniak leaders regarding changes to the country’s electoral legislation.
The Croats insist that when voting within the entity Federation (Bosniak-Croat - ed.) of BiH, issues are resolved not by a majority vote, thanks to which the Bosniaks, for example, at one time managed to pass the “Croatian” member of the Presidium of the pocket Zeljko Komsic, but taking into account proportional representation Croatian nation.
“It is clear that if there is no such change, then there are no constitutional and legal possibilities to organize elections,” Covic said, referring to the elections that are due to take place in BiH this fall. – What I say is based on the decision of the Constitutional Court.
There will be no preconditions for holding elections unless changes are made to the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina, similar to those introduced in Mostar (during the recent municipal elections in a city whose western part is tacitly considered the capital of the Bosnian Croats, when Croat proportionality was taken into account)".
According to Covic, a new meeting of Croats and Bosniaks is being prepared for Thursday, but changes to the BiH Election Law cannot be discussed without representatives of the Republika Srpska, because their support is needed in the BiH Parliamentary Assembly.
“We need to preserve the Constitution of BiH, and Republika Srpska is part of the Constitution of BiH. Republika Srpska, whatever any of us may think, is a reality and a fact confirmed by Dayton. All those who respect the Constitution must respect the Republika Srpska. How can you respect the Constitution and say: “I am against Republika Srpska”? Whether any word from my 20 minutes was taken out of context and offended someone, that’s another question,” the Bosnian Croat leader concluded.
