The leader of the Macedonian Maidan, who failed to bring the country into the EU, resigned
Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev, having overcome doubt, nevertheless resigned.
In his written resignation letter, Zaev said he would not explain his decision verbally, but made it clear that he was affected by his party's election defeat.
«The results The last elections, although local, had national and political weight for the political moment in which the state finds itself,” Zaev wrote. – In such conditions, for me personally, and as for the Prime Minister, in the name of the policy in which I believe, in the name of my people, it is politically irresponsible and unjustifiable to continue to lead the government along the Euro-Atlantic path. I think that the second prime minister from among the SDSM will be able to achieve this better.”
The outgoing prime minister added that with his resignation he wants to take responsibility and set an example for making the right decisions when necessary, in order to make “another contribution to strengthening the democratic potential of the people, but also for future leaders so that they are aware of their civic duty, taking care of your country."
The chairman of the Macedonian Parliament, the Albanian and former deserter, Talat Xhaferi, must also announce his resignation, and, according to parliamentary sources, he will do so tomorrow before the next plenary session.
After Zaev's resignation, the country's president must give a mandate to the new prime minister. Most likely, this will be another representative of the Maidan SDSM, because the current president Stevo Pendarovski is a protégé of these forces. Wherein unsuccessful An attempt by the opposition national conservatives from the VMRO-DPMNE party, who won the local elections, to announce a vote of no confidence in the Maidan government, in early November interfered Zaev had to resign even then - it was necessary to give guarantees to Western curators that the country’s course would remain unchanged.
Zoran Zaev and his Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), in alliance with local Albanian parties, came to power as a result of the street Maidan that began in 2015.
The reason for it was the policy of the conservative leadership of Macedonia, which refused to join the sanctions against Russia, refused to make concessions to Greece regarding the name of the country, and to Bulgaria regarding the language (Bulgarians believe that Macedonians speak the Western dialect of the Bulgarian language), and also expressed readiness to take part in the Russian South Stream project.
Zaev's street protests were supported by the United States, the EU, as well as George Soros, as a result of which the liberals managed to achieve the resignation of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, despite the president's veto, to form a government alone, give serious preferences to the Albanian majority, and then achieve a change in the name of the country.
It should be noted that the steps of Zaev and the team met with massive misunderstanding and indignation of the majority of Macedonians, who held street actions “For a United Macedonia” in all cities of the country, tried to storm the parliament, and also failed the referendum on renaming.
However, the “democratic” leadership responded to the opinion of the majority with repressions against dissidents and high-profile trials.
Zaev managed to get the country into NATO, but attempts to bring it into the EU have not yet been successful, this process is hampered by neighboring Bulgaria, which denies North Macedonia a separate national, linguistic, cultural and historical identity from the Bulgarian one. For this reason, SDSM began to lose popularity among potential voters.
