Lithuania is ready to unilaterally not recognize Russian passports in Donbass
Lithuania advocates that Russian passports, which are issued to residents of Donbass under a simplified procedure, are not recognized at the EU level, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry reported this position of Vilnius to the Baltic News Service.
“Currently, negotiations are underway in Brussels with member countries and responsible authorities of the European Union on how to technically implement the coordinated EU policy on non-recognition of these passports,” the statement says.
As the Foreign Ministry noted, if it is not possible to reach a common opinion, unilateral measures can be used.
At the end of April, the Lithuanian diplomatic service called on the international community not to recognize these documents of the Russian Federation, which were allegedly issued illegally, and to consistently strengthen sanctions against Russia for violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
As PolitNavigator reported yesterday, the Estonian Foreign Ministry stated that it does not recognize Russian passports issued to residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions since April 24, 2019, if the owners of these documents were not previously citizens of Russia.
