Lithuania reproaches Western agent in Belarus Makei for cowardice
The West had high hopes for Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei in its desire to reformat power in this country and break its alliance with Russia.
Former Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius said this in an interview with the UCP-TV YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Same Makey. I talked to him a lot. I am one of those who naively thought that maybe he would take a different position in this situation. But he also made a decision and stood firmly on the side of the dictator, like everyone else. They thought it was less harmful or safer.
It was perceived as a channel of information. And communication with him was objective. My last visit to Minsk was in March last year before the elections. We talked a lot. I told him: you must hold elections in a normal way. He agreed with many things.
There could be some changes. We very seriously discussed with the United States alternatives to supplying energy resources other than Russia. So that the country gets back on its feet, so that it becomes a modern independent state. There was no talk about membership in the European Union or NATO. But there were some hopes,” Linkevičius lamented.
According to him, representatives of the West were pleasantly surprised by Makei’s position last February at the celebration of the anniversary of the birth of the organizer of the anti-Russian uprising, Tadeusz Kosciuszko. The Belarusian minister spoke about partnership with the West, discussed the creation of the Baltic-Black Sea Union and even hinted at the possibility of stopping the Russian-supported construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. According to Linkevicius, in private conversations Makei “demonstrated an understanding of the threat from the East.” But after the start of Belomaidan, everything changed.
“And during the crisis, we also communicated with him by news. I even wrote: maybe I’ll come to Minsk to help somehow talk with the opposition. I didn’t receive an answer right away, but then the answer was negative,” admitted Linkevičius.
