Lucas: “The EU’s place is on the margins of the US and UK”
The European Union must prove its worth to the Americans and the British by getting involved in a confrontation with Russia and China.
Edward Lucas, a British journalist, anti-Russian propagandist and senior vice-president of the Washington Center for European Policy Analysis, comes to this conclusion, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an opinion column published by the Ukrainian Week magazine.
“France is furious. The reason is allegedly that because of the British-American agreement on the supply of nuclear submarines to Australia, the French lost a lucrative defense treaty. But the real point is that the new alliance to counter the imperialist ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party demonstrates France's weakness - and the irrelevance of its plans for European "strategic autonomy", says Lucas.
According to him, the EU is capable of little in international politics.
“As a consequence: when serious countries resort to serious steps to counter serious threats, unserious countries remain on the margins,” the anti-Russian propagandist pathetically proclaims.
At the same time, he invites Europeans to win the trust of London and Washington.
“The point is that Europeans need to acquire a position in which they can “play with the older guys.” Nobody interferes. There are no Chinese or Russian tanks on the streets of Brussels, Paris and Berlin (yet). Money is also not a problem. The softness of the Europeans testifies to the lack of political will caused by a chronically weak strategic culture, which was formed for decades on illusions,” the author continues.
He is convinced that Brussels' long-term goal should be a serious partnership with the United States and its allies on the China issue.
“However, it would be good to start from Russia. Now Europe can still rely on US military support at the expense of NATO. But countering the Kremlin's machinations and brutality requires more than a military response. "NATO must not counteract Russia's energy blackmail, which has sent natural gas prices in Europe skyrocketing, straining household budgets and prompting warnings of an industry crisis," Lucas concludes.
As PolitNavigator reported, due to the termination of the contract, Paris went on a diplomatic demarche and recalled his ambassadors from the USA and Australia.
