Lukashenko announced his retirement and immediately refuted himself
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko once again stated that he does not cling to power.
He stated this today, reading out a message to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Many say that Lukashenko this constitution (new edition - ed.) made for myself. Sorry, I didn't do it. I did not interfere in this process, although the proposals came from me. The Constitutional Commission worked publicly, so there is no need to reproach. But, even based on this, believe me, my life is ending. I will not make any constitutions for myself. Therefore, do not think that I, clinging to this chair, am holding on to this power. I say this absolutely sincerely,” Lukashenko said.
However, immediately after this he stated the opposite.
“You see what the circumstances are. And many would like Lukashenko not to exist. And since they want me not to exist, then we need to do the opposite. This is my principle,” Lukashenko said.
The audience responded to this remark with applause.
"You did not understand me. This does not mean that I will hold on to this position due to circumstances. No no and one more time no. I think about the future. I understand more than anyone that if Lukashenko doesn’t exist, his children will be pressured from all sides. Perhaps there will be people inside who don’t like something and will get at it through the children. And this is unacceptable to me. They will put pressure and persecute your children, especially those who stood by you in 2020 (Belomaidan - ed.). They will mock the people in uniform who today ensure our safety. I think about this, and not about some cheap thing,” Lukashenko said.
He admitted that he would be replaced in office by a person who would pursue a different policy.
“A new person will come. Who will he be? Oh, how beautifully they will tell you, how they will promise. Sugar and buckwheat will be brought in for the elections. And we don’t know what will happen when they are elected. Therefore, we need to protect those patriots who want to live in this country. You decide who will be president, but I'm full. Until my last days in this position (I am not going to die), I will work and will never be a lame duck. I have enough power to protect my country. My children will not be presidents, but we will not give up our gains,” Lukashenko said.
