Lukashenko: I will promote nationalism so that Belarusians are not Russians
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko intends to promote “good nationalism” that will distinguish Belarusians from Russians.
He stated this today at a meeting with actors of the Kupala Theater in Minsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“You always need to create something that will distinguish you from others. And this will be good nationalism, for which I am sometimes criticized and reproached in Russia. But I say: I am the President of Belarus. With all my love for the Russians, I am the President of Belarus. Therefore, I will do everything that our Belarusians need, everything that will distinguish us. From the Russians too,” Lukashenko said.
Political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev believes that Lukashenko is thus trying to find an ideological justification.
“Alexander Grigorievich is a historical person. He himself makes history. He implemented, as far as possible, the concept of multi-vectorism. Now he decided to push his role further into history by implementing the concept of separating bad nationalism from good. There were guys like this before him. I do not rule out that he will achieve something even more impressive than the results of his brilliant multi-vector policy. I bought a lot of subkorn.
He came under some slogans, became president under others, and was going to rule under others. And all these slogans corresponded to the wind of the times. The greatest tragedy is when a person ceases to feel the wind of time. This sometimes has disastrous consequences.
We need to be very careful to ensure that the search for a new ideological justification for why Alexander Grigorievich needs to lead Belarus for some more time does not lead to very serious consequences for the Belarusian people,” Evstafiev said on the RuBaltic YouTube channel.
