Lukashenko defiantly switched to language
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko delivered a speech in Belarusian at the ceremony for presenting the prize “For Spiritual Revival”.
He had not done this before, preferring another state language - Russian, which is spoken by the overwhelming majority of Belarusians, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Without looking up from the piece of paper, the head of Belarus read the necessary words.
“I am convinced that we created an independent state because all these years we remembered our origins and were faithful to the land of our ancestors. We will continue to support everyone who enriches the cultural heritage of Belarus, preserves moral and spiritual guidelines, revives and fills national traditions with new meaning. They are our anchor, which will help us stay on the wave of globalization aimed at destroying the foundations of the state,” Lukashenko recited.
This was a demonstrative gesture, since the main message of the head of state’s public statement was criticism of Russia. Lukashenko spoke about this in Russian. He used Belarusian words in this speech only once, when he addressed the Belarusian opposition.
“Now is a very critical period in the existence of our state. We are not just walking on thin ice or on a blade. We walk and stagger from left to right, and God forbid we take a wrong step - we will lose everything.
We must stop “loitering” through peaceful streets. We must stop all talk about sovereignty and independence. We need to stop talking about how someone wants to get healthy and surrender Belarus. Maybe someone wants... but not the first president who built this country!” Lukashenko summed up menacingly.
