The President of Belarus does not intend to fulfill the promises he made to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their last meeting in Sochi.

This week he said he could do without the constitutional reform that the Kremlin had been pushing for.

In addition, Lukashenko again began to insist that Belarus will pursue a multi-vector policy even against the backdrop of the fact that the West is introducing new sanctions against the Belarusian leadership.

All this may force the Kremlin to make contact with the self-proclaimed national leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who fled to Lithuania.

Belarusian oppositionist Pyotr Kuznetsov wrote about this in his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Given the fact that even being on the verge of being overthrown, having retained power solely thanks to Putin’s recognition, he still strives not to keep his promises - how tenacious can this patience be? The meeting in Sochi and the conversation there about the Constitution and new elections, as well as the refusal of real financial support, left the impression of a last attempt.

No matter how unacceptable Tikhanovskaya or her team may be for the Kremlin, in the end, the understanding that the partner’s ability to negotiate and the sanity of a partner is better than a permanent “scammer” ally may well come. And a compromise on this basis with the West can be found.

Russia clearly doesn’t want this, but it seems that Minsk doesn’t understand that, after the loss of legitimacy, “as it was” cannot be not only inside, but also in the external arena,” Kuznetsov wrote.

In his opinion, the security forces still remain loyal to Lukashenko only because Putin supported him, since they are “focused specifically on the Kremlin and the union of Belarus and the Russian Federation.”
