Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and their son Nikolai visited the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Stavropegic Monastery on Valaam on Tuesday.
Lukashenko looked animated and immediately told the abbot: “I am glad that I came here for the first time, surrounded by my friend.”
“Next time I’ll come with an axe, a saw, a scythe and we’ll see how you manage things here,” Lukashenko promised.
In the church, he and his son, following Putin, venerated the icons and lit candles, but, unlike the Russian president, they did not get baptized. The elder Lukashenko pressed his hand to his stomach, the younger did without gestures at all.
The presidents visited several monasteries and the Valaam Museum.
