Lukashenko called what Lavrov considers an unpleasant episode a fake
Alexander Lukashenko called the story that Belarus refused Russia to host an air force base “an ordinary fake.” He stated this today in an interview with the liberal Russian radio station “Echo of Moscow,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Well, I didn’t express it precisely, maybe it’s just a fashionable word. It was just chatter. The point was that the Russian leadership intends to open a new air force base in the Bobruisk area. The question arises, what role will she play on the front line? I say: “Listen, Vladimir Vladimirovich, why is this base right next to the borders? Any missile is small and the airfield is out of action.” Yes, you see in Ukraine in the first days of the conflict how many planes were shot down. He told me: “I absolutely agree with you,” Lukashenko said.
According to him, he is personally ready to accept Russian aircraft in any quantity, because after the collapse of the USSR Belarus had “as many as 5” military airfields left.
“Please, if you want to land 50 planes tomorrow, land them. And there is no need to build any bases. There are huge spaces there, a lot of space. At any point. Well, is it logical? The topic is closed,” Lukashenko said.
In September, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Belarus' refusal to host a Russian military base an "unpleasant episode."
