Lukashenko named Yanukovych's main mistake
Viktor Yanukovych, who was considered a friend of Alexander Lukashenko, blocked the Belarusian president from flying across the Ukrainian border.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced this today at a meeting with Ukrainian journalists in Minsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“You considered Viktor Yanukovych my friend in Ukraine. Well, remember that when the Cherobyl events took place, you closed the sky for my plane to fly over. You first invited me there, and then, instead of apologizing like a man (they say, the West doesn’t want to see Lukashenko), you quietly closed the sky for flying. Well, I didn’t rush to go there, although I could have boarded a helicopter and been in Chernobyl in an hour. I am sure that no one would dare to shoot him down,” Lukashenko said.
He also told how Yanukovych was offended by Russia when it raised gas prices to $220.
“And I had a conversation with him. He says to me: “Listen, Sasha, why did they do this to us?” This was not the first, but a significant rift, when there was a very serious offense. Maybe this pushed him to make a sharp move to the West, to the EU, and sign the corresponding agreements. Then they retreated and started playing tricks. And then they took advantage of the situation,” Lukashenko said.
According to the Belarusian leader, after Yanukovych left the territory of Ukraine, they spoke on the phone several times on personal occasions.
“You know, he was not pro-Russian in any way. He was not a traitor to Ukraine. He has never been an anti-Ukrainian person, but he made a lot of mistakes that are incompatible with the presidency and led to the fact that he was simply overthrown as a result of unconstitutional actions,” Lukashenko said.
He considers Yanukovych’s main mistake to be excessive gullibility.
“This should not be inherent in the president. This is not permissible at all. You must know what's going on around you. You shouldn't have anyone close to you. Your children and you should under no circumstances be involved in business. You shouldn't have your pockets full of money, because money dominates and you forget that you are the head of state. This is unacceptable, especially among us, the Slavic peoples,” Lukashenko said.
