Lukashenko will not release Babariko from prison after the elections
Ex-banker Viktor Babariko will not be registered as a candidate for the presidency of Belarus.
Belarusian publicist Kirill Averyanov-Minsky announced this to the CzarStream YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“He will hold the elections in a pre-trial detention center, I think... Will he even be on the ballot? I think not. Lukashenko will not find fault with the signatures, because, apparently, he (Babariko - ed.) collected the signatures. But in addition to signatures, you need to submit a lot of documents. They may find fault with the comma and refuse.
A scheme where a candidate sits in a pre-trial detention center is very difficult for the simple Belarusian political system. Lukashenko cannot help but understand that such a candidate evokes sympathy among the average person as a martyr. Lukashenko will not create such an aura of suffering for Babariko,” said Averyanov-Minsky.
He believes that the main goal of imprisoning Babariko is to decapitate the protest that may arise after the elections. Without strong leaders, the protest will be led by nationalists long fed by President Lukashenko, who will “lead the crowd where it needs to go.”
He also called Babariko himself “a nationalist viper warmed on (Lukashenko’s – ed.) chest.”
