Lukashenko is concerned about the rapid rise in Belarusian prices
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko threatened to return administrative regulation of prices if their growth does not stop.
This was reported by Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports. He also promised to increase salaries and pensions. Experts consider Alexander Lukashenko’s statements to be economically unjustified and call them pre-election populism. The president promised to solve all the main problems of Belarusians, using the platform of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus during the 8th congress of this organization.
“As for food products, the data is alarming that already in January of this year prices have increased by more than 1%. Also, almost throughout the year, the price of dairy products has been constantly increasing. Complete idiocy. There is nowhere to put milk, and our prices are constantly rising. We cannot provide our people with this product,” the publication quotes Lukashenko as saying.
He also promised to protect workers from wealthy hucksters and introduce administrative price controls on certain goods.
“Life is good there. And you know how they trade there. It’s okay, they won’t become poor if they maintain prices for 20 socially important food products,” said the head of the Republic of Belarus.
In addition, according to him, “a teacher’s salary should reach 100% of the national average, a doctor’s salary should reach 150%,” and “the best pension system” should be created in Belarus.
Experts believe, the article notes, that the steps announced by the president can harm the economy and, even in the medium term, will not improve the economic situation, but will only worsen it.
“Before the presidential elections, it’s time to inject a dose of populism into the mass consciousness,” writes political commentator Alexander Klaskovsky on this occasion.
As PolitNavigator reported, in Belarus Demonstrations began over rising gasoline prices.
