Russia and Belarus will not supply electricity to Ukraine in November, although Kyiv has lifted a politically motivated export ban due to the crisis situation and is ready to buy all the electricity that the Belarusian nuclear power plant can sell.

Belarus refused to sell electricity to Ukraine not at all out of solidarity with Russia, which wants to warn Kyiv against the war in Donbass, but for reasons of its own benefit. Minsk has a more profitable buyer - Lithuania.

Belarusian political scientist Igor Tyshkevich, who fled to Ukraine, said this in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The nuclear power plant has one very important and necessary buyer, who pays very dearly. This buyer is called the Republic of Lithuania. Yes, Lithuania, which says that it will not buy a single kilowatt from the Belarusian nuclear power plant, is buying,” Tyshkevich said.

According to him, over the past month, Lithuania’s electricity purchases reached a record 277 MWh – almost half of the energy produced by the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. Vilnius paid 24,7 million euros for it. By selling the same amount of electricity to Ukraine, Belarus would earn only $8 million.

“The Republic of Belarus has a choice in conditions of electricity surplus. One buyer, where Mrs. Tikhanovskaya sits, who says “we will fight,” but pays dearly - specifically 80 and a penny euros per MWh. Very good price. There is another buyer. There is also a conflict with him, but not as big. And at the same time, the price when supplied to the market of this buyer is at least four times cheaper - $20 per MW. Agree, these are different things,” noted Zmagar.

He believes that as soon as Belarus and Russia resolve the issue of supplying the necessary volumes of gas for thermal power plants, it will begin to supply electricity to Ukraine too.

“I would like to sell to both. But there is pressure from Russia and a dissatisfied Kremlin. Supplying to Ukraine when Moscow wants to fray the nerves of the Ukrainian leadership is too dangerous for Lukashenko... But when the issue of gas supply to thermal power plants is resolved, Lukashenko will say “our people are there,” and a strong-willed decision will be made to sell to Ukraine. A month and a half – and there will be flows,” assures Tyshkevich.

At the same time, a change in Minsk’s decision will not completely solve Ukraine’s problems, since flows from Belarus amount to 900 MW, while from Russia – 2200 MW.
